The case for investing, in one number

Cash is not the safe option it feels like. Money left idle loses purchasing power every year at exactly the inflation rate, with no volatility to warn you it is happening. The loss is quiet, it is compounding, and it is certain.

Pakistan's latest reported CPI is 11.1%, while 6-month T-bills yield about 11.79% (macro layer, 2026-07-24). That T-bill yield is the near-riskless bar — any investment carrying real risk should be judged against it, not against zero.

Two ways to read the same fact

The calculator shows both directions because people think in both. The first tile is what today's amount will buy later. The second is what you would need later to match today's amount. They describe one phenomenon, and seeing both usually lands harder than seeing either alone.

Where the default comes from

The inflation field is pre-filled from the latest CPI figure in the Henneth data layer rather than a round number typed from memory — the same rule the desk applies to every price it publishes. Change it freely: the assumption is yours, and a single month's print is a poor guide to a ten-year horizon.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Pakistan's current inflation rate?

The latest CPI reading carried by the Henneth data layer is 11.1% year-on-year, as of 2026-07-24. CPI is published monthly by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and moves a lot month to month, so check the current print before relying on any single figure.

Why does my money lose value even in a savings account?

Because the return has to clear inflation before anything is left over. If a deposit pays less than the inflation rate, the balance grows in rupees while shrinking in what it can buy. That is a certainty, not a risk — which is the honest case for investing rather than a sales pitch.

Is CPI the right measure for me personally?

Only roughly. CPI is a national basket. If your spending is concentrated in food, fuel, rent or school fees, your personal inflation can run well above or below the headline number. Use CPI as a floor for planning, not a precise personal figure.

What rate should I use for long-term planning?

Most people use something near the recent average rather than the latest month, because single months are noisy. Running the calculator at a low and a high assumption tells you more than any single number will.
